Assigning an importance level

If you want to create a table of contents or automatically number headings while keeping the styles created in the document (not preset styles), you must assign an importance level to each paragraph or to each paragraph style.

To a paragraph

Make sure that you are in Print Layout view.

Place the cursor in the relevant paragraph or select the paragraph.

From the Home tab, go to the Paragraph group and click the images/13i10.png button.

Click the Indents and Spacing tab.

In the Outline level list, choose a level for the heading (from 1 to 9).

Click OK.

Assign an importance level for each paragraph in the same way.

To a paragraph style

Make sure that the cursor is not placed in a paragraph with a preset style, such as Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.

From the Home tab, go to Styles and click the images/13i10.png button to launch the Styles pane.

Point to the style to which you want to attribute an outline level, click the images/13i76.png button, then choose Modify

Click the Format button then Paragraph.

In the Outline level list, choose a level for the paragraph style (from 1 to 9).

Click OK twice.
