Numbering headings

Numbering outline headings created with preset styles

Place the cursor anywhere in the text. You can be in any view.

From the Home tab, go to Paragraph group and click the images/13iac21.png tool button.

Click one of the options where the word Heading appears.

Word adds the numbering to each preset style (Heading 1, Heading 2 …). Each of the document headings are numbered depending of the format you have chosen and their levels.

Place the cursor in a paragraph with a style applied to it.

From the Home tab, go to the Paragraph group and click the images/13iac21.png tool button.

Click Define New Multilevel List.

If needed, click the More button to display additional options.

For each style you wish to define:

  • Select the level in the Click level to modify area.

  • Choose the style you want to associate with a level using the Link level to style list.

If you wish, modify the numbering format options (cf. title below).

Click OK.

Word automatically numbers the paragraphs that use styles where you have linked style levels.

To remove numbering from one or more paragraphs, select them then choose the None option in the list linked to the images/13iac21.png tool button: Word will automatically renumber the document.

To delete the numbering from a document, you have to delete the numbering from each style you want: click a paragraph which has a style with numbering, do a in the Styles pane then click the Modify option. Click the Format button then the Numbering option, select the None option then click OK twice. ...
