Modifying column width/row height

One column/row

Place the insertion point in the table.

To change the width of a column, point to the vertical line to the right of the column you wish to modify. The mouse pointer takes this shape images/so01.png.

Next, click and drag:

With just the mouse

To modify the width of the particular column and compensate by changing the width of the column on the right (the total width is unchanged).

With the [Shift] key

To modify the width of the particular column without adjusting any others: the overall width of the table is affected.

With the [Ctrl][Shift] keys

To modify the width of a particular column and adjust all the columns to the right in order to preserve the overall width of the table.

To change the height of a row, go into Print Layout view then point to the horizontal line beneath the row (the pointer takes this shape images/so02.png).

Double-clicking the vertical line to the right of the active column will adjust the column width to its contents.

If you hold down the [Alt] key as you drag, the dimensions of the column/row appear in the ruler.

If you only want to modify the width of one or a few cells in a column, and not of the entire column, select the cell(s) and proceed as if you were modifying the column width.

Several columns

Select the columns.

From the Table Tools - Layout tab, go to the Table group and click the Properties button. Click the Column tab in the dialogue box that appears.
