Working with a document outline

Click the Outline button on the View tab (Views group) to go into Outline view.

To display the heading of a particular level and above, open the Show Level list images/13i77.png on the Outlining tab and click the appropriate option for the required level. For example, if you click Level 4, you will see all the Level 4 headings as well as those for levels 1, 2 and 3.

You can also select a level by holding down the [Alt] and [Shift] keys and typing the level number on the alphanumerical keyboard.

To view the whole document, including headings and text, open the Show Level list, and click the All Levels option.

To show just the first line of each paragraph, check the Show First Line Only option.

To hide the text linked to the active heading, double-click the cross images/13i73.png that precedes the heading or click the images/13i79.png tool button or press the - (minus) key on the alphanumeric keyboard.

To show the text linked to the active heading, double-click the cross images/13i73.png that precedes the heading or click the images/13i80.png tool button or press the + key on the alphanumeric keyboard.

To promote a heading up one level, place the cursor in the relevant heading, then click the images/13i75.png tool button or press [Alt][Shift][Left arrow].

To demote a heading down one level, place the cursor in the relevant heading, then click the images/13i74.png tool button or press [Alt][Shift][Right arrow].

To move a heading with any associated text or subheadings, point to the images/13i73.png that precedes the heading then drag it to its new position or click the title then the images/13i81.png or images/13i82.png tool button.
