Attaching a caption to an object

Adding a caption manually

Select the object.

From the References tab, go to the Captions group and click Insert Caption.

Choose a label from the Label list: Equation, Figure or Table. Alternatively, click the New Label button.

The New Label dialogue box appears when you click the New Label button.

Write a description of your caption in the Caption box.

In the Position box, choose where you want to place the caption: Below selected item or Above selected item.

If necessary, click the Numbering button, open the Format list and select the required number format. Click OK.

If you do not want the label to appear as part of the caption, check the Exclude label from caption option.

Click OK to insert the caption.

Adding a caption to an object automatically

Captions can also be added automatically: you designate a particular type of object and each time you insert that sort of object, a caption appears automatically. You must make this choice before you start inserting objects in the document.

In the References tab, go to the Captions group and click Insert Caption.

Click the AutoCaption button.

In the Add caption when inserting list, check the checkbox(es) for the type(s) of object that should take an automatic caption.

In the Use label list, click one of the suggested labels or click the New Label button to create your own.

In the Position box, choose where you want to place the caption: Below item or Above item.

If necessary, click the Numbering button, ...
