Creating a custom header or footer

Creating identical headers and footers for all pages in the document

From the Insert tab, click Header or Footer in the Header & Footer group, then click Edit Header or Edit Footer; if you are working in Page view, you can also double-click in the top or bottom margin of one of the document pages.

The document text goes grey and the insertion point blinks in the header or footer area. The Design tab related to the Header & Footer Tools is highlighted in the ribbon. If you are working in Page view, you can also double-click in the top or bottom margin of one of the document pages.

If your document has several sections, the pane name is Header -Section n- or Footer -Section n- (n being the number of the section).

Enter the text of your header or footer, then make any formatting changes you might want.

The text is entered above the dashed line. You can insert fields in the header or footer area of the page (cf. Fields - Inserting a field).

To switch from the creation of a header to the creation of a footer, click Go to Footer in the Navigation group. Click Go to Header to switch from the footer to the header.

When you have finished entering and formatting the information, click Close Header and Footer, in the Close group on the Design tab, or double-click in the document, outside the header and footer area.

Headers and footers are only visible in Print Layout view or Print Preview.
